Wine Region: Tuscany - Italy
Grape: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese
Tasting notes: The 2016 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia radiates freshness and sheer energy, thanks to the excellent material available in this classic vintage. The base of the wine is Merlot, but the winemaking team at Ornellaia sources fruit far and wide along the Tuscan coast to locate the Sangiovese and the Cabernet Sauvignon that completes the blend. The wine opens to a rich, dark appearance and offers succulent fruit tones of blackberry, blackcurrant and lingering spice. You also get that characteristic freshness that comes from the Sangiovese. - Robert Parker
About the winery:
In the early 1970s, Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta, kickstarted the "Super Tuscans" category with Sassicaia. In 1981, his cousin, Lodovico Antinori, founded the Ornellaia estate on property neighbouring the Sassicaia estate. Ornellaia released its first Tuscan Bordeaux blend in 1985 and celebrated the opening of its winemaking facility two years later. Ornellaia is located on the Tuscan Coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the section of the Northern Maremma between Livorno and the island of Elba. In 1991 Michel Rolland joined the team as a consulting oenologist and created Le Volte.
